BIM implementation is a key initiative promoted by the Vietnamese government to accelerate digital transformation in the construction industry. As a partner with the Institute of Construction Economics (VKT), the governing organization of Vietnam’s national BIM program, Vilai Viet, as a general contractor, had the opportunity to join an intensive training session conducted by leading BIM experts organized by VKT.

Learning from BIM Experts

On June 18, the Institute of Construction Economics held a training program titled: "Advanced knowledge update in BIM management, cost management, and digital transformation for construction investment projects". The session attracted participants responsible for BIM coordination, implementation, and management across various organizations.

The training was led by renowned BIM experts, including Mr. Ta Ngoc Binh – Head of Investment Economics Research at VKT, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung – A leading specialist in Lean Construction and BIM with over 20 years of international experience, along with other experts from different BIM-focused institutions. Key objectives of the program included:

• Equipping professionals with essential BIM coordination and information control skills
• Enhancing planning capabilities, model quality supervision, and Common Data Environment (CDE) operations
• Updating project cost management methods aligned with global practices
• Understanding and comparing contract models for strategic decision-making
• Applying BIM and digital tools in proactive cost estimation and real-time budget control

Speakers shared best practices in international-level BIM and VDC (Virtual Design & Construction). From implementation strategies and CDE management to model quality monitoring, all presented through practical, real-world case studies. Contract strategies and cost estimation methods were also discussed in detail to help managers and practitioners apply them across all project phases.

Experts also acknowledged the many challenges BIM adoption still faces in Vietnam, both in terms of management and human resources. However, with ongoing efforts from companies in training, process standardization, and collaboration, BIM implementation in real-world construction projects is becoming increasingly feasible.
